A little Latin beat on this one. It feels unfinished and I still haven’t mastered mastering so there is some distortion, but it is a good start, I think.

Keyboard bass with the Apache arpeggio plug-in at the end

Soldier’s Joy

My Dad visited and wanted to cut a little track with me so we played this traditional song that I have been learning as I slowly teach myself how to play the mandolin. He played my Martin. Added a little tiny bit of reverb for depth, but this one is all acoustic. The real wizardly was making a “best-of” from the different takes, particularly since our tempo changed a bit. Cubase did some cool magic to make this happen. Unfortunately, we got a little distortion on the guitar, I think because it was recorded a little too quietly. One of these days I will get a better mic.

A simple 12 bar blues with 2 guitars, midi drum and bass.
Adrenalin set on “Roger Linn Blues” amp with some light stereo delay a fair bit of drive.
Lead is set on “Fender Bassman” amp with light mono delay and less drive.

Club-a-dub-dub

Playing around with some clubby kind of bass and drums. Items of note for this recording:
- Guitar with a “Marshall amp” and filter-sequence I customized on the AdrenaLinn
- Programmed the drum by hand on Cubase
- Played the bass line then tinkered with it in Cubase including adding an arpeggio filter in the middle part
- The “strings” in the middle are the keyboard sent to the “Embracer” synth module. Stuck with that since I hosed my Roland.

Fun times were had by all.

And a tip: save a lot with Cubase. It crashed and I lost everything but the guitar track and drum beat and had to re-record the base and synth and re-arrange everything.

Grungy Pop

The start of a grungy little pop song. The guitar tracks were done with the AdrenaLinn on customized distortion and delay settings. The bass-line and drums are both midi, initially via a keyboard and then tinkered in the midi editor. The bass got a little help from a midi filter to give it a little more interesting rhythm.

King’s Mourning

This song is another one I wrote for The Winter’s Tale. Instruments: Martin D70 acoustic guitar and Roland XV-3080 with the Complete Orchestra card. I picked up the Roland fairly cheap along with a so-so midi controller keyboard from Craig’s List.

I have spent the last week or two figuring out how to program the damn thing and it wasn’t until today that I was finally able to produce some music with it. The string and brass arrangement is pretty weak, but you get the idea.

Watch out: it is mixed pretty low, so don’t blow out your speakers next time you play something. I am still learning, obviously.

Turnaroundish

This is the first one using the AdrenaLinn that I have put any time into. I even took the time to write lyrics and sing both vocal tracks before realizing, oh yeah, I can’t sing. So I have played the melody instead. The lyrics weren’t that good anyway.

This song is four electric guitars with serious synced filtering and/or tremolo and a midi drum track. I will probably throw in a base when I eventually get a keyboard. Hand-writing the midi is just too much of a pain.

The name? Well, it’s sort-of a turnaround. The song is actually about one person coming to town and one person leaving and it sort of turns all musical-theaterish with the two parts melding into one. Never came up with a very good name.

Linn Wah

This isn’t a great song, but I am just starting to play around with my new RogerLinn AdrenaLinn II. It is providing the drum sequence, as well as the strange arpeggiated rhythm guitar and wah effect.

A song I wrote for Seattle Public Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Winter’s Tale’. It has two acoustic guitars and a mandolin. The guitars have a little reverb for depth.
